We sell Chinese seedlings, chinkapin seedlings, timber hybrid seedlings, grafted chestnut cultivars and seed chestnuts. The seedlings are sold as bare-root stock, shipped from late December through May, or as container stock. Small quantities of container trees can be shipped during their dormant season, September through April, or can be picked up any time during the year. Allegheny chinkapin seedlings (Castanea pumila) - Grown from our own selected population of chinkapins (not chinkapin oaks!) Allegheny chinkapins are native to southeastern USA. They are a shrub or small tree reaching a mature height of about 25 ft. They produce large quantities of tiny nuts (400-500 per lb.) in clusters of burs. They are great for wildlife or landscape use. Available as 1-yr bare-root, 2-yr bare-root or 2-yr container (1 gal.) stock.

Timber hybrids (Castanea hybrids) - Seedling trees of hybrid ancestry including Chinese, American, and European. Seed collected from highly selected, blight resistant, timber-type mother trees. Grafted chestnut trees - Chip budded onto seedling rootstocks in early spring and greenhouse-grown in 2 gal. pots (12 to 36 in. tall, depending on clone). Plant at least two clones for cross-pollination (any two). We offer a selection of cultivars that we consider to be the best, described below. - 'Eaton' - Selected in CT, probably a seedling of 'Sleeping Giant', medium to large sized nuts, early ripening
- 'Gideon' - Pure Chinese, selected from our orchard, medium to large sized nuts, mid-season ripening
- 'Kohr' - Selected by Clarence Kohr in Pennsylvania
- 'Payne' (formerly 'Byron 3-3') - Pure Chinese, selected from Jerry Payne's USDA planting in Byron, GA; very large nuts; not yet widely tested
- 'Peach' - Pure Chinese, selected from our orchard, medium to large sized nuts, mid-season ripening
- 'Perry' (formerly 'Lindstrom 93') - Selection from Jerry Payne's planting in Byron, GA; nuts slightly smaller than 'Byron' but better shaped.
- 'Qing' (pronounced "ching") - Pure Chinese; the original tree is a yard tree in western Kentucky; ripens in mid-season (same as 'Peach' and 'Gideon'); large nut size, excellent flavor, excellent keeping quality, and it peels easily.
- 'Shing' - Pure Chinese from Nanjing, China, seedling selected by Mike Nave in California; vigorous, productive, large-sized nuts; not yet widely tested
- 'Sleeping Giant' - Selected in CT, hybrid with mainly Chinese characteristics, medium to large sized nuts, early ripening

- 'Crane' - Medium-sized nuts, late ripening, upright growth habit
- 'Byron' (formerly 'Lindstrom 67') - Selection from Jerry Payne's planting in Byron, GA, vigorous grower, large nuts (but mis-shapen)
- 'Nanking' - Was once a very popular cultivar in southeastern USA, medium to large sized nuts, late ripening, tends to over-produce resulting in smaller nut size
- 'Norris' - Reportedly resistant to chestnut weevils, medium sized nuts
- 'Orrin' - Similar to 'Nanking', medium to large sized nuts, mid-season ripening, tends to over-produce resulting in smaller nut size
- 'Paragon' - This is most likely the "Sober Paragon", an American-European hybrid widely planted in the early 1900's. It has a vigorous, upright growth habit, is a consistent bearer of medium-sized nuts, mid-season ripening, very blight susceptible, It has produced many outstanding offspring both in terms of nut production and timber-type growth.

For those who wish to grow their own seedling trees, we offer specially selected seed chestnuts. These are the same chestnuts that we plant to produce our seedling nursery stock. They are collected only from the best mother trees, i.e., blight resistant, cold-hardy, consistent bearers of large, high quality chestnuts. They are selected for nut production (not timber) and are mostly pure Chinese (C. mollissima). If you would like seed from a particular mother tree, we can provide it, just give us a call.
